Course Outline

Humanities and Social Studies

Content:

Term 1

History: Ancient Egypt

  • Historical timeline
  • Egypt and the Pharaohs
  • Everyday life in Ancient Egypt
  • Tombs and Treasures
  • The Egyptian influence- Evidence and inspiration

Geography: Geographical skills and Fieldwork:

  • Use maps, atlases, globes to locate countries and describe features.
  •  Use the 8 points of the compass, four and six-figure grid references, symbols and      key to build their knowledge of the UAE and the wider World.

Locational knowledge:

  •  Locate the world’s countries, using maps to focus on Europe (including the location of Russia) and North and South America, concentrating on their environmental regions, key physical and human characteristics, countries and major cities.

Term 2

History: Ancient Greece

  • Who were the Ancient Greeks?
  • Work and relaxation in Ancient Greece
  • Everyday life in Ancient Greece
  • Trade, art and ideas

Geography: Human and Physical Geography

  • Describe and understand key aspects of physical Geography, including climate zones, biomes and vegetation belts, rivers, mountains.
  • Identify the position and significance of latitude and longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, Arctic and Antarctic Circle, Prime/Greenwich Meridian and time Zones. (including day and night)

Location knowledge

  • Name and locate countries and cities. Identify physical and human characteristics and how it has changed over time.
  • Longitude and latitude

Term 3

History: History of leisure and recreation.

  • Games
  • Sport
  • Have people always gone on holiday?
  • Storytelling as entertainment
  • Educational recreation

Geography: Human and Physical Geography

  • Describe and understand key aspects of physical Geography including volcanoes and earthquakes and the water cycle.
  • Human geography, including types of settlements and land use, economic activity including trade links and the distribution of natural resources including energy, food, minerals and water.

Assessments: Breakdown of 100% mark

The final grade for the course will be calculated based on:

Multiple forms of assessments, both formal and informal, will be used to gain knowledge about a student’s level of understanding.  Assessments will be in the form of End of Unit Evaluations, End of Unit Project, Formal Assessment.  All formal test dates will be posted on the communicator.
